For Clinicians
Information for GPs, consultants and surgeons referring patients to IP Physio. We work as an extension of your care: criteria-based rehabilitation, objective measurement at every stage, and clear written reporting back to you.
How to refer a patient
1. Send the referral
Email the patient's details to info@ipphysio.co.uk with the working diagnosis, relevant history, imaging or operative notes, and any loading restrictions or precautions. A formal letter is welcome but not required; a short clinical summary is enough for us to triage appropriately.
2. We triage and book
We contact the patient directly, usually within one working day, and offer the earliest suitable appointment across our Soho, Marylebone, Canary Wharf and Notting Hill Gate clinics. Post-operative and acute sports presentations are prioritised.
3. Initial assessment
Self-pay initial assessments are one hour. Where clinically useful we include diagnostic ultrasound, handheld dynamometry and ForceDecks force-plate testing at the first visit so baseline objective data is captured from the outset.
4. You receive an initial summary
After the first appointment we send you a concise summary covering our findings, baseline objective measures, the rehabilitation plan, expected timeframes, and anything we recommend you review, including onward imaging or opinion where indicated.
5. Ongoing communication and discharge
We update you at key milestones or sooner if the presentation changes, and send a full discharge and outcome report when care is complete.
Patients with private medical insurance can be referred in the usual way; we are recognised by the major UK insurers and can advise on authorisation requirements before the first appointment.
What our discharge and outcome report contains
Every episode of care ends with a written report sent to the referring clinician. It is designed to be read quickly and to give you defensible, measurable evidence of the patient's status at discharge.
- Patient identifiers, referrer details, dates of first and final attendance, and total sessions delivered.
- Presenting complaint, mechanism of injury or onset, and relevant clinical or operative history.
- Assessment findings, including diagnostic ultrasound findings where imaging was performed in clinic.
- Baseline and discharge objective measures: handheld dynamometry values with limb symmetry indices, and ForceDecks metrics such as jump height, rate of force development and left-to-right asymmetry.
- Patient-reported outcome measures relevant to the region, alongside pain and function scores at baseline and discharge.
- Interventions delivered across the episode, including manual therapy, loading programme, gym-based and plyometric progressions, and shockwave therapy if used.
- Criteria met for progression and return to running, training, sport or work, stated against defined thresholds rather than time elapsed.
- Residual deficits, ongoing home programme, relapse-prevention advice, and clear recommendations for any further medical review.
Interim reports are available on request at any point during an episode, and we are happy to provide a clinical summary to support insurer authorisation, occupational health review, or medico-legal enquiry where the patient consents.
Scope of practice and onward referral
We manage musculoskeletal and sports presentations across the spectrum, with a particular focus on lower limb injury, pre- and post-operative rehabilitation, tendinopathy, and return-to-sport decision making. Post-operative patients are managed strictly in line with your protocol, and we will request operative notes where they have not been supplied.
Where a presentation falls outside physiotherapy scope, or where findings suggest the need for further imaging, injection or surgical opinion, we will say so clearly in writing and direct the patient back to you rather than continuing conservative care.
