Gait & Running Analysis
Gait and running analysis at IP Physio is a video-based assessment of how you walk and run, combined with strength and force plate testing, delivered by chartered physiotherapist Ilias Paschopoulos at our Soho, Marylebone, Canary Wharf and Notting Hill Gate clinics in London for injured and uninjured runners alike.
Why the same niggle keeps coming back
You have had the same problem for months. You rested, you did the exercises, and it returns as soon as the mileage goes back up. Or you are not injured but training is getting harder, a race is coming, and you want to know whether your mechanics will hold.
Running is roughly 160 to 180 repetitions per leg per minute at two to three times body weight. Small inefficiencies do not stay small; they accumulate into overload of a specific tissue. Analysing the movement tells us where load is being concentrated and why the same structure keeps taking it.
The assessment covers treadmill running captured on video from multiple angles and reviewed frame by frame, plus walking gait where relevant. We look at cadence and stride length, foot strike and contact time, overstriding, vertical oscillation, pelvic drop, hip and knee control in stance, trunk position, arm mechanics and asymmetry between sides.
What you leave with
A clear explanation of what your video shows, which findings are actually relevant to your symptoms, and which are simply your normal variation. Not every asymmetry needs fixing; the ones that map onto your injury do.
Where a technique change is warranted, we make it specific and measurable, most often cadence, stride length or trunk position, and we give you a graded plan for embedding it without spiking load elsewhere. Where the real problem is capacity rather than technique, and it often is, you get a strength programme targeting the deficits we measured.
You also get practical training guidance: load progression, surface and footwear considerations, and how to build back to your target volume without repeating the pattern that caused the problem.
Our objective-data approach
Video analysis is paired with dynamometry, because a technique fault such as pelvic drop or knee valgus is usually a strength or control deficit expressing itself. Measuring hip abductor, quadriceps and calf strength tells us which it is.
ForceDecks testing quantifies single-leg power, reactive strength and landing asymmetry, which correlates far better with running overload injuries than any single kinematic observation.
Where a specific tissue is implicated, an Achilles, a plantar fascia, a proximal hamstring, diagnostic ultrasound confirms the structure before we commit to a loading plan.
