    Why IP Physio?

A good sports physiotherapy clinic in London should do more than treat pain. It should measure, explain and progress your recovery with objective data. At IP Physio, that is exactly how we work.

What makes a good sports physiotherapy clinic?

The best sports physiotherapy clinics share a few common features: a thorough assessment, a clear diagnosis, treatment built around your goals, and honest measurement of progress. Athletes and active people need to know not only what is wrong, but also whether they are ready to train, run, lift or compete again.

In practice, that means looking past symptoms and asking why the problem happened in the first place. It means tracking the things that predict recovery, such as strength, power and movement control, not just how you feel on the day.

The limits of a purely time-based approach

Many physiotherapy appointments follow a familiar rhythm: a brief chat, some hands-on treatment, a few exercises, and a recommendation to book again in a week or two. Progress is often judged by pain levels, how long the injury has lasted, or by the number of sessions completed.

That can be helpful in the short term, but it has a weakness. Pain is only one part of the picture. Tissues can heal while movement and strength deficits remain. An athlete may feel fine but still have a clear left-to-right strength gap, poor landing mechanics, or reduced tendon capacity that makes re-injury more likely. Guessing at readiness is one of the common reasons people flare up again soon after returning to sport.

    Our objective-testing approach

At IP Physio we use point-of-care testing equipment that gives us hard numbers to compare against the healthy side and against re-test data over time. This is not about technology for its own sake. It is about making the right decisions at each stage of your rehab.

    Handheld dynamometry

Handheld dynamometry measures the force a muscle or muscle group can produce, usually comparing the injured side to the uninjured side. We use it to quantify strength deficits after injuries such as calf tears, hamstring strains, ACL reconstruction or shoulder dysfunction. The result is a percentage gap that tells us how far you still have to go before the limb is symmetrical, safe and robust.

    ForceDecks dual force plates

ForceDecks force plates record how you jump, hop and land. The data shows jump height, take-off and landing forces, rate of force development and left-to-right asymmetry. These are often the last things to recover after pain has settled, and they are the metrics we use to judge readiness for running, cutting, jumping and return to competition.

    Diagnostic ultrasound

Diagnostic ultrasound lets us look at tendons, muscles and bursae in real time during the appointment. It helps confirm which tissue is involved, rules in or out common problems, and provides a visual baseline. Over time we can repeat the scan alongside function tests to see how the tissue is responding to loading and rehabilitation.

How objective testing changes your care

    • Your diagnosis is supported by live imaging and measurable strength and power data, not only by symptoms.
    • Treatment is targeted at the deficits that actually matter for your injury and your sport.
    • Progress is tracked in numbers, so we know when you are improving and when the programme needs to change.
    • Return-to-sport decisions are based on capacity, not the calendar.
    • Setbacks can be caught early because we re-test at key milestones.

    Who this approach is for

Objective testing is useful for almost anyone recovering from a musculoskeletal problem, but it is especially valuable for runners, footballers, tennis players, weekend warriors, post-operative patients, and anyone who wants to return to sport or heavy training with confidence. It is also useful for desk workers with recurrent problems, because the data shows us the underlying capacity issue that keeps driving symptoms.

    Experienced across four London clinics

We deliver this testing-led model at our clinics in Soho, Marylebone, Canary Wharf and Notting Hill Gate. Every session is one hour for self-pay patients, so there is time to assess, test, treat and explain what the numbers mean for your plan.
